Serpents, Staffs, Sorcery & Poison: A History Of The Word “Pharmacy”

[EDITORIAL ESSAY]

It is an obvious understatement to say that the political, medical and media “events” of 2020 provided a plethora of subject matter to be discussed and debated.

Regardless of our own views and opinions, it cannot be argued that our everyday cultural landscape changed drastically worldwide. And although the phrase “new normal” was used in an obnoxiously tyrannical way throughout these events… the phrase itself proved to be quite accurate. Many things considered “normal” pre-2020 are no longer.

Among the many interesting cultural shifts and changes was the very loud, public rise in the religious zealotry of The Statist (those who believe in the higher power and authority of the corporate state).

In the United States… the Statists are those who believe in higher authority of The District of Columbia, it’s claims, it’s rituals and it’s sacred texts.

A pillar of the Statist belief system is complete and absolute faith in the Medical Industrial Complex and its holy sacrament… pharmaceuticals.

The blind faith, hope and trust placed in this corporate, commercial infrastructure is a quality that would make even the most successful mega-church envious.

The religious comparisons become even more interesting when investigating the origins of the words pharmacy, pharmacist and pharmaceutical.

The Online Etymology Dictionary (https://www.etymonline.com/word/pharmaceutical) traces the origins to the Greek word pharmakeia, which meant:

– a healing or harmful medicine, a healing or poisonous herb; a drug, poisonous potion; magic potion.

A person who specialized in this area was a pharmakeus (fem. pharmakis):

– a preparer of drugs, a poisoner, a sorcerer

Pharmaceuticals were pharmakon:

– a drug, a poison, philter, charm, spell, enchantment.

These definitions get even more interesting when considering that up until fairly recently in our history, the words drug and poison were almost interchangeable. Or put another way, “drugs” used to be a fairly negative, poisonous aspect to everyday life.

Also interesting when considering the religious aspect:

Longtime online bible study source BibleHub.com provides a rather impressive set of references for the Greek word pharmakeia that relate to spells, magic and sorcery.

It’s well-known and documented that many traditional believers in Biblical text are not too fond of magic, spells or sorcery. Just ask Harry Potter author, J. K. Rowling.

Is it mere coincidence then, that the symbol associated with the Medical Industrial Complex is a serpent wrapped around a staff? This symbol is called the Rod of Asclepius.

Stranger still is the fact that some healthcare organization use a symbol that includes two (2) snakes wrapped around a staff, with wings. That symbol is call the Caduceus.

Is it simply just another coincidence that the Caduceus is Greek mythological symbol associated with commerce?

If you’re keeping score, you’ve got poisons, sorcery, spells, enchantments, serpents and commerce all coming together to form the history of what we all know as the modern medical and pharmaceutical industries.

With all of this in mind, spend the next 44 minutes watching the highly recommended documentary by James Corbett, Rockefeller Medicine, which brilliantly lays out how one man – John D. Rockefeller – forever changed the entire United States (and most of the known world) in regards to healthcare, science and pharmaceuticals.

And Rockefeller did so while destroying natural, homeopathic and traditional practices. Rockefeller replaced them with his favorite trio: chemicals, surgery and radiation.
